New Chandigarh, October 19: Punjab FC continued their fine run of form with a convincing 4–1 victory over Sporting Club Delhi in a friendly match played in New Chandigarh on Saturday, as both teams prepare for the upcoming AIFF Super Cup in Goa, set to begin on October 25.
The match marked Sporting Club Delhi’s first appearance under their new identity, having previously competed as Hyderabad FC. Despite their early efforts, Punjab FC’s sharp attack and clinical finishing proved too strong on the day.
After a cagey opening half-hour, Mangenthang Kipgen broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, calmly slotting home to give Punjab FC the lead. Just five minutes later, Ninthoinganma Meetei doubled the advantage with a precise finish after a well-worked move from midfield, putting the hosts firmly in control heading into the break.
Captain Nikhil Prabhu made it 3–0 in the 50th minute, heading in from close range following a corner. Sporting Club Delhi pulled one back through Alex Saji just four minutes later, briefly lifting their spirits. However, Punjab FC maintained their dominance throughout the second half, keeping possession and dictating play.
The result was sealed in the 85th minute when Omang Dodum struck Punjab FC’s fourth goal, capping off an impressive all-round display from the Shers.
With the Super Cup just around the corner, this performance will give Head Coach Panagiotis Dilimperis plenty of confidence as Punjab FC look to carry their momentum into the national competition.
